Manchester United are closing in on a potential deal with Inter Milan for goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is considered “difficult to replace.” The Premier League giants are expected to make an “absurd” profit of £42 million from the player who arrived at San Siro on a free transfer just 12 months ago.

Onana, known for his exceptional reflexes and accurate distribution, could become Manchester United’s first signing of the summer. Gazzetta dello Sport reports that all parties are eager to reach an agreement before the week concludes.

Inter Milan is under pressure to sell at least one star player to address their Financial Fair Play concerns. While finding a suitable replacement for Onana would be challenging due to his unique abilities, the sale of the Cameroonian international represents a significant financial gain.

Former Inter midfielder Fausto Pizzi acknowledges the absurdity of the capital gain and expresses that it will be challenging to replace Onana. Inter director Piero Ausilio and Onana’s agent have both traveled to Manchester to negotiate with Manchester United. The Champions League runners-up will not stand in the way of the 27-year-old goalkeeper, with United ready to double his £50,000-a-week wages at Old Trafford.

Onana is set to become the third former player to reunite with Erik ten Hag in England’s northwest, following Antony and Lisandro Martinez. He is expected to replace David de Gea after Ten Hag decided against offering a new contract to the Spaniard.

Onana, who won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax, has attracted praise for his goalkeeping abilities. However, the current football landscape necessitates considerations beyond holding onto a player regardless of the offer received. While former Inter player Sebastien Frey would prefer to keep Onana, he believes Inter will likely let him leave due to other needs and financial considerations.
