On Thursday, Manchester United defeated Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0 at home to guarantee their place in the Europa League’s knockout rounds.

With goals from Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford, and Cristiano Ronaldo, Erik ten Hag’s team found the Moldovan side to be a reasonably simple challenge. The outcome also ensures that the Red Devils will enter their final group match against Real Sociedad knowing that a victory of two goals will guarantee them first place.

United got off to a slow start, controlling possession but struggling to get past a Sheriff team that was arranged in a deep 4-5-1 formation. Maxym Koval stopped an early right-foot shot from Antony, and Stjepan Radeljic cleared Casemiro’s header off the line.

Bruno Fernandes missed with his shot on minute 26, and Ronaldo’s subsequent header required Koval to react quickly to keep the ball out. Christian Eriksen’s attempt from outside the box was stopped by the Sheriff goalkeeper, who also had to work hard to stop Ronaldo’s attempt from a similar distance.

As the first half went on, the assault intensified, and Tyrell Malacia’s shot was blocked as he got past the Sheriff defense. However, it was the opposing full-back who scored the first goal; Dalot climbed highest in the box to meet Eriksen’s corner and give United a much-deserved lead while also scoring just his second goal in two appearances for the Red Devils.

After the break, it was a familiar tale: Eriksen had a free-kick bounce against the wall, then Ronaldo blazed a shot wide from a position where he should have found the back of the net. Soon after, the 37-year-old did score, but it was rightfully disallowed for offside in the build-up.

When the second came, two replacements combined. On the 64th minute, Rashford was found by Luke Shaw in the box, and he headed the ball over Koval. Before Ronaldo scored the goal he so obviously desired upon rejoining the squad, Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho both had late chances that were both saved.

When Koval palmed the former Real Madrid player’s header back into the middle, Ronaldo moved quickly to poke the ball beyond the goalkeeper and into the goal.

The players for United are ranked as follows.
