“If Chelsea get in the top four this season, I think they’ve had the biggest result ever” Paul Merson Says

Paul Merson, a former player for Arsenal, has cautioned Chelsea supporters against becoming “carried away” with their manager Graham Potter’s successful debut at Stamford Bridge.

After being fired a few weeks ago, Potter, the former manager of Brighton, took over immediately.

Only three games have been managed by the Englishman, 47, with two victories and a draw against Salzburg in the Champions League.

Merson cautioned Chelsea supporters against getting overexcited because Potter’s team has yet to face “anyone of actual note.”

He said not much should be expected from the Blues this season and predicted Graham Potter’s team would perform better the next year.

In an interview with the Daily Star, Merson said of Chelsea’s next match against Wolves: “I watched Chelsea at Crystal Palace last weekend and I believed the Blues got away with one.

“AC Milan was a good result, but they were fortunate to have a team, so Graham Potter shouldn’t be given too much credit just yet.

“I believe Chelsea will have achieved the biggest result ever if they finish in the top four this year. I don’t intend it disrespectfully, but it will take time to put his Brighton-based ideas into practice.

“I believe that Chelsea will be drastically different next season. They’ll pose a serious threat.
