Man United star set to sign long-term contract just weeks after being handed new deal

Manchester United player Diogo Dalot is allegedly about to sign a new contract with the club – only weeks after his current agreement was extended.

Dalot was one of a handful of United players who had their current contract expire in the summer, including the likes of Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and David de Gea.

United possess an additional year option on all of those agreements, though, but the club have decided not to exercise De Gea’s option owing to the fact that it would keep him on the same pay for another season. As per The Telegraph, United want De Gea to accept a wage cut to stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer.

But they did add an additional year to the contracts of Rashford, Shaw, Fred and Dalot, as revealed by coach Erik ten Hag, providing them precious time to negotiate new and better terms with the three.

All four players have significantly contributing to United development under Ten Hag this season, with Rashford having scored 11 goals and supplied four assists in only 13 games in all competitions since the end of the World Cup.

Dalot was outstanding in the early part of the season, but has not featured for United since January 10 via injury. He was, however, selected on the bench for the side’s 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Portugal right-back had reported interest from AC Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid, amongst others, with worries about his long-term future at United at one time.

But it now looks that he is close to eliminating concerns about his future by signing a new agreement.

Spanish site Mundo Deportivo have stated that Barca pursuit of Dalot is poised to be terminated, with negotiations including United over a new deal believed to be at a ‘advanced stage’.

They believe that United have placed a five-year deal and a financial proposition on the table, with the club and Dalot’s representatives having been talking since the player returned from the World Cup.

Speaking last month, the Portugal defender talked of his wish to stay at Old Trafford (quotes via Daily Mail): “We are in a position to state that we are negotiating and seeing how both sides can benefit, but it is no secret that I am glad to be here, so we will see how things go.

“I adore this club and I love to play for this club. Progressively we are in a positive direction as a team. For me, this is the most essential component and maybe personally I can continue to support the team as I am doing.”
