“NOTHING IS NEW” Graham Potter’s biggest problem at Brighton was goalscoring and it’s also a problem for him at Chelsea

Anybody who thought Graham Potter would make Chelsea an aggressive side capable of scoring a lot of goals must have been dreaming.

Potter is aware with Chelsea’s goal drought since he previously experienced it when playing for Brighton.

Although finishing ninth in the Premier League last season, Brighton’s best season under Potter, scoring goals was still an issue for his squad.

Just 42 goals were scored by Brighton in the Premier League last year. In the previous season, only four clubs scored less goals than Brighton, and three of those teams were dropped.

In the final third, Chelsea are now significantly poorer than Potter’s Brighton were in 2021–2022. In their 17 league games, Chelsea under Potter have only scored 15 goals, averaging 0.9 goals per game.

Moreover, Chelsea’s goal scoring has declined under Potter as opposed to Thomas Tuchel. With Tuchel, Chelsea averaged 2 goals per game in the Premier League the previous season and 1.3 goals per game this season before he was fired.

Todd Boehly may have anticipated better after firing Tuchel, but under Potter, Chelsea has only averaged 0.9 goals per game.

Chelsea averaged 1.7 goals per game in 63 league games under Tuchel, almost twice as much as the Blues did under Potter.

Moreover, when compared to Potter, Chelsea had a greater xG (1.7 to 1.2), more shots (15.2 to 11.9), and more big opportunities (2.4 to 1.9).

With the offensive talent at Chelsea’s disposal under Potter as opposed to under Tuchel, the attack should be improving, not deteriorating.

In all honesty, Potter isn’t a good enough player for Chelsea.
