Pochettino set to make new Chelsea captain decision after Cesar Azpilicueta departure as frontrunner reveals

As Mauricio Pochettino settles into his role at Chelsea, he is emphasizing the need for “leaders” to step up from the team’s dressing room as he considers who will take over the captaincy from the departing Cesar Azpilicueta.

Pochettino began his work at Chelsea on Monday, and one of his initial significant decisions will be the appointment of a new captain.

With Azpilicueta nearing a move to Atletico Madrid on a free transfer, his 11-year journey at Stamford Bridge is coming to an end.

Pochettino intends to finalize his selection for the new captaincy during pre-season, allowing him to familiarize himself with the players starting from his first training session on Tuesday afternoon.

The 51-year-old coach acknowledges the necessity for leadership if he is to achieve success at Chelsea. He stated, “We need leaders, not followers, in every aspect, and we will motivate everyone to perform at their best and give their all for the club.”

Thiago Silva appears to be the frontrunner for the captaincy, having taken on the role in Azpilicueta’s absence last season. Silva has also captained the Brazilian national team.

Other potential candidates for the role include Kepa Arrizabalaga, Raheem Sterling, and Reece James, as the youthful squad seems to lack natural leaders.

Former vice-captain Jorginho departed for Arsenal in January, while N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, and Mason Mount, who have all previously worn the armband for Chelsea, will not be with the club in the upcoming season.

Pochettino is also demanding commitment from his players as he aims to rectify the shortcomings of the previous season.

“If we are united, we will be very strong,” he affirmed. “We have an incredible squad and will certainly bring in players who are committed and want to be a part of it. With the support of the fans and everyone involved, we can once again find the path to success.”
