Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are anticipated to miss Manchester United’s first Premier League matchup against Nottingham Forest on December 27.

First-choice center-halfs for Erik ten Hag advanced to Sunday’s exhausting World Cup final on different teams, with Martinez’s Argentina defeating France on penalties following a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Varane, who had been battling the illness that struck a number of France players in the last days leading up to the match, played until the 113th minute before collapsing from exhaustion while chasing down a loose ball. Ibrahima Konate was then brought on to replace Varane.

Martinez, on the other hand, did make five appearances throughout the campaign but was not utilized as a substitute.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Martinez and Varane will miss Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match against Burnley and the visit from Forest the day after Boxing Day. United generally gives each of its World Cup players a week off.

On New Year’s Eve, United plays Wolves at Molineux, where the two might be back in the mix.

Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, and Marcus Rashford, members of the club’s England contingent, are anticipated to resume training this week. Antony, whose Brazil team was also eliminated at the quarterfinal stage, was spotted on Monday at United’s Carrington training facility.

Senior players that did not participate in the World Cup were David de Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial, and Alejandro Garnacho.

Christian Eriksen was among the first players to make a comeback after Denmark was eliminated at the group stage, and Tyrell Malacia, who didn’t play a single minute of the Netherlands’ campaign in Qatar, may also make an early comeback.

Erik ten Hag will likely add players from the club’s academy to his lineup for Burnley’s visit on Wednesday.

Zidane Iqbal, Charlie Savage, and Charlie McNeill were all absent from United’s Under-21 team’s Monday night match against PSV Eindhoven.

The trio participated in the club’s friendlies in Spain and might play against Vincent Kompany’s team.
