Ten Hag defeated Ronaldo, backed it up with success – Says McGrath

Paul McGrath, a former Manchester United defender, claims that Erik ten Hag would have been under extreme pressure if something had gone wrong after he let Cristiano Ronaldo leave the team.

In 38 games across competitions after his return to the club in the summer of 2021, Ronaldo scored 24 goals and provided three assists.

In his first season back at the club, the 38-year-old went on to take home the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year honor.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s importance was diminished at Old Trafford by Ten Hag, who was appointed as Solskjaer’s permanent replacement.

By mutual accord, he left the team in November, but Ten Hag’s choice to, as many would see it, insult the football monarch, aroused questions.

Ten Hag has guided the team to the EFL Cup victory, and if they defeat Manchester City in the FA Cup final on June 3, they might add another prize to their trophy case.

In order to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, they also need one point from their final two league contests.

In his Sunday World column, McGrath stated that “then you throw in the issues Ten Hag had with Cristiano Ronaldo and it added more fuel to the fire.”

The manager needed to defeat Cristiano Ronaldo and then follow it up with victory, and he has succeeded in doing so.

Ten Hag would have been under extreme pressure if something had gone wrong after he decided to leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of his squad, the man claimed.
