Frank Lampard has made an effort to defend his strategy in remarks made following Tuesday’s defeat to Madrid.

After the game, he told BT Sport, “We played pretty well for the whole sixty minutes. “Perhaps it’s normal to make some adjustments and try again after the goal, when it’s 3-0 in a draw.

“I believe you understood for 60 minutes why I chose the lineup. The absence of an aim was the only thing. When you play at this level and aren’t clinical, you can see what occurs when one or two goals shift the dynamic of the game.

“There are two types of motivation: individual and group. Every day, we need to be competitive. I chose a team today based on individual strength and fitness, and they proved they could compete with Real Madrid.

Chelsea supporters were in shock when the starting lineup was revealed. They were baffled by the lineup and Lampard’s attempt to cram four central midfielders into it. Other than Havertz, there were no attackers.
