“Why not” – Chelsea player flirts with idea of €30m+ transfer, not hiding from situation

Earlier this week, we highlighted reports from Germany disclosing that Ian Maatsen’s recent contract extension with Chelsea features a £30 million release clause. This revelation raised eyebrows, given that Maatsen is currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund, making it unlikely for them to have a primary option to secure his permanent signing.

Sky Deutschland journalist Patrick Berger now provides an update on Maatsen’s situation, indicating that the Chelsea loanee is fostering optimism among Borussia Dortmund fans about a potential extended stay. Maatsen himself has expressed openness to the idea of returning beyond the loan period, stating, “I’d love to come back in the summer. Why not? But we’ll see what the future brings.”

Supporting earlier reports, Berger notes that Dortmund would need to cough up around €35 million to secure Maatsen permanently from Chelsea. Given Maatsen’s limited playing time with the Blues this season, the move to the Bundesliga appears to be a beneficial solution for all parties involved. With two starts and an assist in the recent 4-0 victory over FC Koln, Maatsen is making an impact, leaving observers curious about Dortmund’s inclination to pursue his permanent acquisition.
