Chelsea gave a taste of what was to come under Graham Potter, but had to settle for a hard-fought stalemate at the London Stadium, a result that pleased neither West Ham nor the visitors.

Potter’s team dominated from the start, and Joao Felix had an early goal called out for offside as the Blues pressed for an early lead.

West Ham’s chances of getting back into the game were hampered further by the injury to Lucas Paqueta, and the Blues scored the goal that their early dominance deserved when deadline day addition Enzo Fernandez found fellow January addition Joao Felix at the back post, who provided a delicate volleyed finish.

Kai Havertz thought he had increased the advantage minutes later, only for the offside flag to come to West Ham’s rescue again as Chelsea looked to run away with the game in the first half.

West Ham, on the other hand, spluttered to life. Michail Antonio’s attempted backheel forced a wonderful save from Kepa, but their second chance on goal was too excellent for the Spaniard, as Emerson Palmeiri slipped in at the back post against his previous club to bundle in an equalizer.

The second half started much more evenly, with Chelsea controlling possession but West Ham looking threatening on the counter. It was a 45-minute match with few clear opportunities, with neither side able to challenge the goalie for the most of the time.

With ten minutes remaining, Tomas Soucek believed he had given his team the lead, turning in after Kepa had saved brilliantly from Delan Rice, only for VAR to rule out another goal, this time in Chelsea’s favor, and keep the game at a draw.

The Blues were then irritated by the technology, as an apparently stonewall handball by Tomas Soucek inside the West Ham box was not awarded on the field and was not reversed by the video assistant.

It finished all square, with the Blues maintaining ninth in the standings and West Ham remained too near to the relegation zone for their and David Moyes’ satisfaction.
